Herbert was on Friday waiting to have an MRI on an injured shoulder.
North Ballarat Roosters head coach Marc Greig said the MRI would determine whether Herbert was able to play on or call an end to his 2016 season and have surgery.
“I won’t be having anything to do with the decision.
“That’ll be up to him and the medicos. They’ll be making the call.”
Herbert was not far away from being named for the Roosters to face Coburg ar Eureka Stadium on Saturday.
However, the shoulder problem, which he aggravated while playing for Learmonth in the CHFL a week ago, does not allow him to fend off players – a restriction which would make playing difficult.
Herbert has had no luck on the injury front in his first season with the Roosters after being delisted by Gold Coast Suns last year.
He damaged a hamstring in an opening round win over Coburg and the run with Learmonth was to be a final hit-out to confirm he was ready to return for the Roosters.
Greig is confident that if North can get as much of the football as it did in a last round loss to Box Hill – it had 55 inside 50s to the Hawks’ 50 – it can bring up the second win of the season.

JORDAN Roughead plays his 100th game for the Western Bulldogs against Port Adelaide in Adelaide on Saturday.
The Bulldogs recruited the now 25-year-old from North Ballarat Rebels and Lake Wendouree with pick 31 in the 2008 national draft.
Roughead has returned to his original role as a ruckman after spending a few seasons as a key defender. He debuted against Adelaide in round five in 2010 and rose to the leadership position of vice-captain last year.
