Detectives say a ute parked within a locked car yard on Latrobe Street was torched last night or in the early hours of this morning.
They say the vehicle was not stolen, but torched where it was parked.
The vehicle was completely destroyed but members from the Ballarat City Fire Brigade attended the scene and stopped the fire spreading.

Police have also issued a reminder for Ballarat car owners to lock their vehicles, following a spate of car break-ins at the weekend.
Thieves have broken into vehicles parked in the Ballarat CBD and at Lake Wendouree since late last week.
A number of these cars were unlocked.
