The capsule had been buried at the foot of a war memorial wall at the old institution and was disinterred when the school was decommissioned and slated to be sold privately in 1996.
Former student Gwenda Skewes says she’s not sure exactly what's in the PVC tube, but thinks there may be letters from the 1970s to the students of today.
“I think there are letters in there, perhaps from their parents or grandparents. Canadian Lead have had it up in their roof ever since, because Eureka Street, Golden Point and another school joined to make Canadian Lead,” says Ms Skewes. (The other schools were Richards Street and Millbrook.)
The handover is in preparation for the Eureka Street PS reunion on October 29 this year, which will recognise the twentieth anniversary of the school’s closure. The capsule will be opened that night at a special dinner.
