SMEATON’S Rhonda Armstrong will face Webbcona’s Ann Gull in the Ballarat District Bowls Division over-60s singles grand final at City Oval today.
Armstrong, who is the defending champion, defeated Raelene Worsley in the first semi-final 21-15 yesterday to be the first bowler through to the decider.
She was joined by Gull, who got the better of Sandy Grano 21-19 in the second final.
Gull came in with a lovely draw and took Grano’s two bowls out to claim a narrow victory.
Both bowlers are undefeated so far in the tournament, which began on Tuesday.
The grand final will start at 10am today.
More than 50 bowlers from the BDBD went to Mildura last week for the Dot Jenkins tournament, a very prestigious event which has been running over many years.
It is a pairs competition with nearly 300 other bowlers from across Victoria, mainly from country areas.
One BDBD pair, with skipper Jenny Harman (Sebastopol) and lead Elizabeth Kierce (Central), got into the play-offs after five winning games over two days and took seventh place.
There was a surprise or two in week three of competition.
Mt Xavier defeated Victoria and Avenue was in good form to take the win over Central Wendouree in division one.
Avenue has a husband and wife combination (Kevin and Marleen Kneebone) in this division.
They are in the same side but not in the one team, while Mt Xavier has a husband and wife duo (Trevor and Joy Adams) in the one team.
The BDBD championship pairs begin next Tuesday, with sectional play at Central Wendouree.
With one or two clubs struggling to field sides, the BDBD is looking for suggestions on how to help them to strengthen the midweek pennant competition.
Predictions for round four:
In division one, the Avenue versus Victoria match it is hard to predict but I’ll go for Avenue.
As the home side, Central Wendouree should get over the line against Beaufort in division two.
Meanwhile, in division three, Smeaton is my selection to have a hard-fought away win against Invermay.
And finally, Buninyong to have a close victory against Mt Xavier in division four.
