The market for sheep is booming, and that’s reflected in the good numbers at the Ballarat Sheep Show this year.

It’s the 135th show, and co-ordinator Catherine Sutton says the focus for this show is the Corriedale, that renowned all-rounder.
“It’s a dual-purpose breed, both meat and wool and they do very well in this area,” says Ms Sutton.
In a positive trend for the Corriedale breed and sheep production generally, Ms Sutton says schools that offer agricultural courses often use the breed for its reliability and hardiness.
“The Ballarat Grammar team is here; they show and breed Corriedales. It’s good to see the kids getting involved. It’s something we’re very passionate about.”
There were more than 30 breeds of sheep on show in Ballarat, as well as agricultural suppliers of feeders and anything else associated with sheep farming.
And while farming has changed over the years – there’s no longer a dinner-dance held by the show – the young farmers at the show bode well for the future.
