Opening on Monday with the ACU Debating Challenge Cup, RSSS chairman Peter Zala says the 2016 eisteddfod has a attracted a record number of entries.
“We are up 6 per cent on last year,” says Mr Zala.
“That number will attract close to 11,000 competitors to stages across Ballarat, including the famous raked stage of Her Majesty’s Theatre.”
Mr Zala says debating is always a fitting way to start ‘the comps’, as the society's beginnings were as The Young Men’s Debating Society in 1879 at Dana Street Primary School.
As part of the 125th celebrations South Street will introduce a new section titled Mi Sound (the Mi represents “Music Industry”). Mi Sound has been developed in conjunction with the College of Sound and Music Production and gives VCE/VET students the chance to perform and receive feedback before their exams.
For the first time in South Street history competitors will perform in a nightclub. Mi Sound will be held at the Miners Tavern.
Also new is the Calisthenics Solo, a more physical version of the famed Graceful Solo. The Solo is tipped to sell out Her Majesty’s when it debuts on October 16.
