His Penny Quartet will fill Ballarat Anglican Cathedral with music as hosted by Friends of the Cathedral. It is the same cathedral where his father, the Very Reverend Chris Chataway, is dean.
Music has always been a major way of life for Mr Chataway growing up, at home and in the church, but it was teacher Kate Both at Ballarat Grammar, who first introduced him to the viola.
“Music has always been there,” Mr Chataway said. “I don’t have anything to compare it to...I’ve worked hard but it’s had a lot to do with mum (a piano teacher) telling me early on I need to practise.”
Initially studying at a conservatorium in Adelaide, spent three intense year in the Australian National Academy of Music in South Melbourne.
The Penny Quartet’s performance will include works by Joseph Haydn, Peter Sculthorpe and Benjamin Britten. The recital is on Saturday, from 2.30pm.
