A new youth centre has recently opened in Sebastopol as part of a response to a community consultation in October.
Director of community and youth engagement at Ballarat YMCA, Stacey Oliver, said the centre was replicated off a similar model currently proving successful in the Wendouree area.
“It is a varied program based around what the young people are interested in,” she said.
“We aim to provide connections through community activities that may assist them when looking for employment, gaining training and continuing study.”
Ms Oliver said the program, which will operate every Friday during school terms, will include a range of activities including hospitality and barista training, hairdressing, games, and cooking.
She said young people will also have the chance to develop their social connections and get involved in a number of excursions aimed at helping them develop life skills
“The environment will be open to all, welcoming, safe and respectful of individuals, with positive adult role models that develop appropriate relationships and support the young people,” Ms Oliver said.
“It’s a space that enables them to be themselves and meet others while participating in a range of activities.”
Recently opened at the Rise Church, the new centre is open to teenagers aged between 12-16 years old, with youths living in the area encouraged to check out the new space.
“The facility features an indoor basketball ring, table tennis table and chill room to have a chat to our awesome staff and see if it’s for you and your friends,” Ms Oliver said.
The program will run between 3.30-6pm every Friday at a cost of $2 per session.
While the centre is currently open, the official launch will take place on Friday, August 12 in conjunction with International Youth Day.
