The Bombers displayed their customary fighting spirit to beat fellow Central Highlands Football League premiership contenders Bungaree in an ugly, yet fascinating battle on Saturday.
Neither team was able to convert a goal in the second and third terms, leaving the visitors to enter the final change with a seven-point lead.
The Bombers’ long wait for a major finally ended when joint-coach Jarrod Morgan pounced on an free kick advantage situation to tie the scores six minutes into the last quarter. Buninyong then edged ahead with a few behinds, before Joel Ottavi picked up possession close to goal and rolled it through to extend the margin to nine points.
From there, Bungaree managed a rushed behind before the siren sounded on another come-from-behind win for the Bombers.
In a difficult day to find clear winners, with skill errors rife given the slippery conditions and high-pressure environment, Matt Caris was in everything for the Bombers and was perhaps best on ground.
Buninyong is four points clear of Springbank on top of the ladder, and with games against Ballan and Clunes to come, it looks well placed to land the minor premiership.
The defeat sees the Demons drop to third on the ladder, while Waubra kept its place in fourth after beating Newlyn on Saturday.
Daylesford has finally broken into the top eight, courtesy of its victory over Rokewood-Corindhap.
The Bulldogs replaced Ballan in eighth spot on the table and are now a game clear of the Blues with two home and away matches to play before finals.
