Team managers hailed the opening round a resounding success, with fun the number one priority for the youngsters.
It was always going to be a fun day for the girls, but the muddy conditions added an extra dimension to this element.
Lake Wendouree and Redan were the opening round winners.
Final scores:
Lake Wendouree 8.15 (63) d East Point 1.2 (8) at White Flat
Redan 11.5 (71) d Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League 2.1 (13) at Creswick
The creation of the new bottom age group means there is now a three-tier pathway for females in the AFL Goldfields region.
The under-12s lead into youth girls (under-18) and seniors, with a Goldfields division and Redan representing the region in VWFL division one.
