Carey's manager Chris Giannopolous confirmed the break-up on Thursday morning.
"It's a family matter and they are still trying to sort out their issues... we've got no further comment to make at this stage," he told Fairfax Media.
Carey and Ms Edwards have been in a relationship since 2011 and have a 20-month-old daughter together, Charlotte Mila, who was born eight weeks premature. They got engaged less than a year ago.
The Channel Seven commentator also has a 10-year-old daughter, Ella, with his former wife, Sally.
In 2002, the football world was rocked after the Kangaroos star was caught having an affair with vice-captain and close friend Anthony Stevens's wife, Kelli.
Carey reconciled with his wife, but the couple separated less than two months after Ella's birth when his affair with model Kate Neilson was revealed.
Carey had to quit his club before the start of the 2002 season after his affair was revealed.
Stevens recently took the initiative to bury the hatchet, the men catching up on the eve of the club's formal 20-year reunion of the 1996 premiership.
In 2007, Carey faced a Miami court in the United States after he admitted to assaulting police.
He was released without conviction on two years' probation.
The incident happened when police were called to a luxury hotel by security staff after Carey struck his then girlfriend, one-time grand prix grid girl, Ms Neilson, with a wine glass.
Carey later said he intended to throw a glass of wine over Ms Neilson, and did not mean to make contact with her.
Carey and Ms Neilson were briefly engaged in 2009, but that relationship came to an end after Ms Neilson said she found Carey cheating on her.
Carey, who is a columnist for The Age, has declined to comment.
