Trains have resumed between Richmond and South Yarra after an earlier suspension that plunged Melbourne's public transport system into chaos during peak hour.

A police spokeswoman said police requested the suspension due to a "trespassing" incident.
Police successfully negotiated with the trespasser to resolve the situation shortly after 7pm.
A Metro spokesman said commuters should expect "major delays as we restore the time table".
The disruption affected the Sandringham, Frankston, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, and spilled out onto Melbourne's tram network as Metro encouraged evening commuters to find other ways of getting home.
