The renowned rapper and Aboriginal rights activist won the song of the year category this week for his modern adaption of Archie Roach’s Took The Children Away.
Like its predecessor, the song has a strong political undercurrent that delves into Australia’s harrowing history, but it also conveyed heartwarming notions of hope for the next generation of Aboriginal people .
The song also featured critically acclaimed Indigenous singer Gurrumul.
Briggs told the crowd he wanted to "pay respect ... a tip of the hat, a homage" to veteran performer Roach.
He urged governments to look at "what good can happen when they invest in kids and not prisons".
Samara plays a young Cathy Freeman in the film clip which was released just weeks after she was racially vilified at a Disney themed children's event at a Melbourne shopping centre in 2015.
