The former Ballarat Clarendon College student was back at his old school on Thursday to discuss his recent Monash University Volunteer of the Year Award.
Riley works with Access Monash, which discusses attending university with students in under-represented and low socio-economic schools.
“To see someone else being empowered is the greatest thing,” Riley said.
“Lots of them talk as if going to university is a fact now. I work with them, do (uni) tours and Q&As.
“I love it, meeting all the students.”
He also interns at Better Practice Better Care looking at LGBT inclusiveness within the doctor fraternity, is the first year rep for Richardson Hall, and was a student ambassador for Monash University’s recent open day.
He was also the UN Youth social media coordinator while still at school.
“If you’re in a position to help someone else, you should help others.
“You learn things yourself. Six months ago I would never have thought that I would know what it was like to empower somebody. It’s so worth it.”
Riley is currently doing a Bachelor of Science Advanced Research (Honours) with a particular focus on neuroscience.
He travelled to BCC from Bacchus Marsh from 2009-2015.
