Josh Driscoll said popping the question, or making a grand romantic gesture, should be what makes you comfortable and happy.
The Ballarat gym owner chose to film his journey in asking for the hand of his high school sweetheart Taylah Woolley from early planning to getting down on one knee before a clued-in sketch artist at the Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne.
There are some tense moments when Taylah almost catches Josh in his ‘sketchy plans’, or in how to pick the right ring, but this is a video-blog with a happy ending.
Taylah said yes.
“Josh is quite a spontaneous person and for him to be planning something weeks before and putting so much effort into it was really nice and more personal,” Taylah said. “There was nothing on the day that Josh did to make me suspicious or feel like he was up to something.
“He would always film our trips away for his vlogs for his YouTube channel Iron Oak, so I wasn’t at all questioning what he was doing that day.”
Josh grew up in Navarre, Taylah grew up in Great Western but it was in year 10 when Josh started to really take notice of Taylah at school.
They started dating as 16-year-olds and Josh proposed on their six-year anniversary.
Josh did a little research first before launching into proposal planning, seeking inspiration for the right approach. He considered a gold class movie and having to leave halfway through the movie, pretending to go to the toilet, before turning around to propose.
Then the drawing idea came to him and he started to sound out Caricatures by Ivano, who prepared the basic sketch and filled in the finer proposal details as they panned out.
Josh wanted to share his happy story and the exciting anticipation in the lead-up.
“I just love to create content that makes people smile and I always say do what you love and I love to film and edit,” Josh said. “(The response) has been nothing but best wishes for the future, and loving the video.”
Josh is yet to confirm whether there would be a perfect wedding-themed vlog sequel. His proposal episode was still pretty new.
The couple has not started to make wedding plans but want something small with family and close friends.
Besides, Josh wants another videographer to take over on the big day.
