A GAVIN Webb century propelled Wendouree to a powerful position after day one of its Ballarat Cricket Association club firsts grand final rematch with Napoleons-Sebastopol on Saturday.
Webb, batting at number three, used all parts of Wendouree 2 in his 115, which came in 170 balls and included 15 fours and two sixes.
The left-hander’s innings provided a platform for the Red Caps, which through a quick-fire 63 (51 balls) from Tristan Dixon, managed 283 before being bowled out shortly before 6pm.
Opener Tom Reece (29) stuck with Webb for an 81-run second-wicket stand.
Then skipper Heath Pyke helped take the score along to 171 before he was caught and bowled by Naps-Sebas captain-coach Dan Davies for 27.
Dixon and Webb then put on a 56-run stand, but when the century-maker departed, the visitors started to get back into the match.
At 4/227, Naps-Sebas turned the screws and restrained the Red Caps, which lost their last six wickets in 16 overs chasing quick runs.
Davies (2/34), Jacob Branch (2/55) and Justin Ringin (2/52) were the best performed of the Naps-Sebas bowlers, while opener Matt Ringin (1/68) was the only other to taste success with three run outs hepling to dismiss the Wendouree boys.
