Young scientists to expand their horizons at forum

PHOENIX College year 11 student Lisa Cody has always dreamed of being a vet.

And she hopes attending a National Youth Science Forum in Perth in January will help further that aim.

Lisa will be joined by 22 other year 11 students from western Victoria at the forums, which will be held in Canberra, Perth and New Zealand.

The students, who are being sponsored by the Rotary Club, all met for the first time last Friday at an orientation session at the University of Ballarat.

“I’ve always been interested in science,” Lisa said. “I’m hoping this new experience will open my eyes to lots of different types of science.”

Lachlan Karacsay from Colac’s Trinity College said it would be a good opportunity to learn more about different types of science.

Hamilton and Alexandra College student Izaac van Roo is also going to a forum to further his interest in aerospace engineering.

National Youth Science Forum chairman for Rotary District 9780 Stewart Riddell said 60 students had applied to attend.

“It’s a fabulous opportunity. Some students in the past who have attended these forums have gone on to win Nobel Prizes,” Mr Riddell said.
