The 33-year-old was one of four Kangaroos stalwarts not offered a contract renewal for the upcoming season, with Brent Harvey, Nick Dal Santo and Michael Firrito all given their marching orders.
Petrie joined North Melbourne in 2000 after being selected at pick 23, and has gone on to kick 428 goals for the Shinboners.

North Melbourne made the announcement on its website at 11.30am on Wednesday, stating “Petrie has epitomised North’s famed Shinboner Spirit with his team first attitude and courage”.
Petrie has struggled with form throughout his 16th AFL season, however he has managed to maintain his spot in the starting line-up all year.
Petrie holds the Ballarat record for most AFL games played, and is just the fifth North Melbourne player to reach the 300-game milestone.
