Helping others in need represents a lifetime of dedication for Gordon Cornell. After a career in the Australian Army Medical Corps, Mr Cornell joined the Victorian State Emergency Service in 1987, working in the Mid West Office Regional Support Unit.

His extraordinary dedication to others was recognised recently with the awarding of two bars to his National Medal. These bars represent the anniversary of Gordon’s 25 and 35 years of service to the Australian community in both the SES and the Army.
“I’ve always been involved in emergency services,” says Mr Cornell. “I’m also involved in the amateur radio part of it and that takes a bit of time.
“I’ve been involved on council emergency planning committees; there are four of them. It takes a bit of time, but fortunately I’m in the SES support unit, and we’re not called out in the middle of the night to fix tarpaulins.”
Gordon is also involved in Rotary and a member of the amateur radio Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network, aiding in emergencies.
