The suicide prevention event, which included an address by Beyond Blue chairman Jeff Kennett, was held at the Mortlake Soldiers’ Memorial Hall.
Organiser Bill Spooner said Mr Kennett and speakers St John of God Hospital Warrnambool mental health services manager John Parkinson and Jack Kenna, who has bipolar disorder, were well received.
The event was organised by the Mortlake Rotary Club after a high incidence of suicides in the region.
“One lady came up after the event and she said she had tears in her eyes listening to Jack,” Mr Spooner said.
“It created a lot of conversations. There were people hanging around for 30 minutes after the event talking to Jack and John.
“My own view is if it helps one person back from the brink off the strength of last night, then we’ve done well,” he said.
Attendees ranged in age from teenagers to residents in their 90s.
The event was originally to be held at the Mortlake Golf Club but it was moved on Monday, after exceeding the club’s 100-person capacity.
“It was a very satisfying night and if we have to do it again we will,” Mr Spooner said.
