Goggin, 40, will lead the eight-strong team at the three-day competition later this month.
“I have been playing for South West District on and off for 20 years and it’s the first opportunity I’ve got to be captain, so it’s fantastic,” he said.
“I have a lot of experience with golf – I’ve been playing nearly 30 years – and because I have been a member of South West District and Corangamite District, I certainly know all the guys who are in the team pretty well.
“I have played a bit in Melbourne too, so know our opponents and hopefully that will come in handy.”
Western District will compete in the middle of three grades for the shield title at Keysborough, Riversdale and Victoria golf clubs.
Goggin believes it can push for promotion.
“Last year the guys did an excellent job to stay in the shield and hopefully with a stronger depth team, we can go one better,” he said.
“Our handicap range is plus-2 to two which is going to be pretty competitive.
“Caleb (Perry) has had a fantastic year and is a great pick up for the Warrnambool and district but unfortunately one of our other young junior school competitors, Cooper Gill, won’t be able to participate.”
Goggin, who plays off scratch, honed his craft in Hamilton and now resides in Warrnambool. He is a five-time Hamilton club champion and also has a Warrnambool title to his credit.
He has five district titles – across Western District, South West and Corangamite – on his impressive golfing resume.
