A Ringwood second hand store got more than it bargained for when a gun was found in a donated box of shoes.
Volunteers at the St Vincent de Paul shop in Ringwood made the surprising discovery last month after a member of the public contributed some second-hand goods.
The gun was found along with six live bullets.
"Our volunteers promptly engaged the help of the Victorian Police and the weapon was taken offsite quickly and safely," said a spokesperson for the St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria.
Radio station 3AW reported that the volunteer who found the gun was a retired police officer, who took the weapon to the nearest police station.
