A two-year-old child seriously injured in a car crash in Melbourne's outer-north was not properly restrained, police say.

Two cars collided at the intersection of Roxburgh Park Drive and Matthews Crescent in Roxburgh Park about 8pm on Thursday.
The little boy found unconscious on the floor of the back seat with serious head injuries after being thrown from his seat.
"Initially we didn't even know there was a child in the car, literally because the child had been thrown around. It was only a short time later that it was brought to our attention that there was a child in the car," Sergeant Dean Pickering said.
"Unfortunately, [when there is] a child in the footwell of the car not restrained, it's going to be injuries."
It is believed there was no child seat in the car, and the boy was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver, believed to be in his 30s, was trapped in the wreckage for half an hour. He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with back and abdominal injuries.
The boy was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition. His condition improved overnight, but he remained in a serious condition on Friday morning.
The driver of the second vehicle was assessed by paramedics at the scene, but did not require hospital treatment.
Police are investigating.
