Courier nature notes writer Roger Thomas said the swan and three cygnets have been out on the lake for the past ten days with the sighting expected for this time of year.
While the number of cygnets is expected to be similar to previous years, Mr Thomas said there is the possibility of a slight drop due to the nesting area being affected by recent floods and a lot more water in the lake than usual.
He cautioned the public to be wary of the swans and cygnets out on the banks of Lake Wendouree with parent swans protective of their young.
Drivers should take the usual precautions around the lake, while dog owners should ensure dogs are kept on leads.
Several more nests are expected throughout the season.
