The AFL, Carlton and Sports Australia hall of famer will lead a decorated panel featuring triple Victorian Football League premiership coach Gerard FitzGerald and AFL Goldfields commissioner Sue Brown, whose twin sons Mitch (West Coast) and Nathan (Collingwood) are AFL listed.
This is a breakfast all about fun and football, including expert analysis on whether Sydney or Western Bulldogs will win the AFL’s Holy Grail, but for Parkin, the breakfast also has an important personal purpose.
Money raised from the second annual Rotary Club of Wendouree grand final event will be donated to the Male Bag Foundation, supporting prostate cancer research and treatment.
Parkin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009. He is a passionate advocate for men’s health and Male Bag ambassador.
The AFL commentator said men needed to do more to support each other and raise awareness, much in the same way women had done so well in breast cancer awareness and research.
When Parkin first started talks about prostate cancer on men’s health nights, he admitted to being a little frustrated half the audience was women – until he realised this did not matter.
“Women are the ones who are supporting them most in this path,” Parkin said. “Wives are generally the ones who follow up and make sure they’re getting check-ups.”
Male Bag Foundation donated $60,000, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Wendouree, to Ballarat Health Services earlier this year for a revolutionary, almost pain free, prostate biopsy machine.
Rotary Club of Wendouree’s grand final breakfast is at Ballarat Golf Club on Saturday morning, from 8am. For more details, or to purchase a ticket, contact Peter Byrne on 0419 880 050.
