Sons of the West,
Red, White and Blue.
We come out snarling
Bulldogs through and through.
Bulldogs bite and Bulldogs roar,
We give our very best.
But you can't beat the boys of the Bulldogs breed,
We're the team of the mighty West
Hopefully, by 5 o’clock this afternoon, Ballarat – and the rest of Victoria – will be heartily singing this song, cheering on our adopted AFL team after they win the 2016 premiership flag.
If the Western Bulldogs are the victors today, Doggies president Peter Gordon has promised the team will bring the AFL premiership cup to Ballarat on Monday.
This will be an opportunity for the whole of Ballarat to say thanks for adopting us as their home away from home.
And it will be chance for the Doggies to say thanks to its true Ballarat fans for hanging in there over the years. Western Bulldogs have not won a VFL/AFL premiership since 1954, the club’s only VFL/AFL premiership.
It would also be an opportunity for Ballarat to meet and greet the Ballarat boys connected with the Western Bulldogs, in players Jordan Roughead and Liam Picken and the club’s head of development Chris Maple.
Apart from bearing the name of Ballarat on their AFL gear, the Bulldogs have a very strong connection to Ballarat.
The Bulldogs will play one regular season match in Ballarat in 2017 and two matches each season for the remainder of their five-year deal with the city.
Their home while in Ballarat will be the Eureka Stadium, which is currently undergoing a $15 million upgrade, which will result in the construction of a 5000-seat grandstand. The overall capacity of the stadium once completed will be more-than 11,000. Even president Gordon hopes the ties with Ballarat will continue for many, many years to come.
Before a warm welcome to the Western Bulldogs and the premiership cup on Monday, the Doggies have to overcome one hurdle … beat the Sydney Swans today.
Go Doggies!
