The reservoir is the largest storage in the Ballarat catchment system, and contains almost 60,000 megalitres of water, four times that of White Swan Reservoir.
The water in the reservoir is shared with Geelong.
Sixty per cent of the water is available to Ballarat. Water careening over the spillway runs into the West Moorabool River as an environmental flow.
The reservoir last overflowed in 2011, and prior to that in 1996. It’s estimated that when full the reservoir can provide eight years of water for the city of Ballarat. It is almost 50 metres to the bottom when full.
