A woman is recovering in hospital after being slashed in the back of the head with a knife after coming to the aid of her neighbour in Port Melbourne on Friday night.

Police are investigating the incident that took place in a public housing apartment block in Florence Place about 9.45pm.
Detectives have been told a man was yelling outside a ground floor apartment. The woman who lived in the apartment opened her door and told the man to leave.
Police spokeswoman Creina O'Grady said the man approached the front door and slashed at the security door with a knife.
A woman living next door went outside and asked the man to go away. A scuffle ensued and the neighbour, a 30-year-old woman, received a cut to her head before the man fled the scene on foot.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the woman was taken to The Alfred in a stable condition.
About three hours later, a 55-year-old man was also stabbed in the head in North Melbourne.
Mr Mullen said emergency services were called to a public housing block in Sutton Street about 1am.
The victim was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for treatment in a serious but stable condition.
A police spokeswoman said the alleged offender - a 48-year-old North Melbourne woman - was arrested soon afterwards in a nearby street. She was interviewed by detectives on Saturday morning.
