Gokturk "George" Aktas was charged by Malvern police with recklessly causing injury after he allegedly smashed a 33-year-old woman in the mouth, causing more than $4000-worth of damage to her teeth.
The woman was allegedly punched when she attempted to intervene in a violent domestic dispute between Mr Aktas and his partner, Denise Thornburgh outside a Prahran house.
The alleged assault is understood to have taken place shortly after midnight on January 1, 2015.
The case was adjourned on Monday morning, after Mr Aktas' lawyer claimed he was not fit to stand trial and would be admitted to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre on Tuesday.
In an unrelated attack last Friday morning, Ms Thornburgh's home in Port Melbourne was peppered with shotgun fire as she and her teenage daughter slept in rooms upstairs.
Shots were also fired into a vehicle outside the Beacon Vista home.
Ms Thornburgh is understood to have been badly shaken by the incident and did not attend court on Monday to support her partner.
Police are investigating if the attack on Ms Thornburgh's home is linked to another drive-by shooting of Boutique nightclub in Prahran on October 7.
The Greville Street club is owned by Darren Thornburgh, who is Ms Thornburgh's former husband.
