Butt, who played in an afternoon group, finished with a one-under total of 71 at the Ballarat Golf Club event.
His efforts mean he tops the leaderboard heading into the second day of competition, which gets underway from 7.45am on Wednesday morning.
Butt leads the tournament, which carries a prize purse of $57,500 and is regarded as the top event for trainee professional golfers, by one shot from Mitchell Anketell, with Hayden Webb, Jack Cox and Adam Burdett tied for third place, just another stroke behind.
Competition continues every day until the fourth and final round on Friday.
