The students have been taking part in a Spelling Bee initiative organised by oral language coordinator Jade Browning to improve literacy levels from the 2013 NAPLAN results.
“We needed to improve spelling across the board,” Ms Browning said.
The students were divided into eggs, tadpoles and frogs according to their spelling ability and given lists of 20-30 words to learn every Monday, with tests every Friday, over about three months.
It culminated on Wednesday with a whole school spelling bee.
Year 10 student Liam Duff said it had definitely helped his spelling.
“On my first test I didn’t put much effort in but now I can see how much I’ve improved,” Liam said.
Classmate Maddi Pearse said she enjoyed trying different levels to see how much she had improved.
