Friday, October 28, Memphis Joe @ Blue Bean Cafe, Hepburn
Joseph Alan Crum, commonly known as Memphis Joe, is an American-born, Australian-based blues, folk and country/gospel singer/songwriter/musician.
He plays mostly personalised guitars and sings – usually about “stuff that has happened along his journey of life.”
Joe grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and was always fascinated with stories by his parents about Elvis Presley, with whom they attended Humes High School with in the 50s.
It was inevitable that the Memphis rockabilly/blues music scene would impact Memphis Joe's life and career.
Joe was profoundly influenced by Bob Dylan's first gospel album Slow Train Coming, which his aunt gave him as an 18th birthday gift.
He ventured to Australia in 1993 after becoming disillusioned with life in the United States.
Since moving here, he has performed at venues including churches, prisons, schools, pubs, clubs, community halls – pretty much everywhere that the door opens.
His third album, Salvation for a Gunslinger was recorded in Sydney at Bill Chamber’s music studios.
There are tracks on the album which Joe recorded with Doug Ford, from the band Master’s Apprentices.
Saturday, October 29, Phil and Trudy Edgeley @ Horvat’s Supper Club
Phil Edgeley – hard-edged blues slide trouper and nimble-fingered folk alchemist – plays his trademark Churchill acoustic, Tim Kill Weissenborn and National Steel guitars combined with a solid reputation as a songwriter.
In the words of Jim Conway, Edgeley is a “masterful guitarist and songwriter who performs with great heart and passion”.
His British folk/blues songwriting is complimented by Trudy Edgeley's tempos and melodies.
