The Goldfields commission will make an application that 13 clubs across the four leagues in its jurisdiction be allowed to have a 50-point cap – two more than AFL Victoria’s reduced upper limit of 48 for 2017.
Only two – Sebastopol in the BFL and Smythesdale in the CHFL – in the region were allocated 50 in the inaugural season of the system this year.
The AFL Goldfields submission is based on the recommendations of its community club sustainability advisory committee for all clubs across the Ballarat, Central Highlands, Maryborough Castlemaine District and Riddell District leagues, which were compiled before AFL Victoria advised it had reduced the cap from 50 to 48.
AFL Goldfields regional general manager Rod Ward said the commission believed the recommended player point allocation would offer each club with an equitable and balanced opportunity to have a successful and sustainable 2017 season.
“The commission endorsed the recommendations from the CCSP advisory committee for some clubs to be allocated 50 points.”
He said it would now have to wait for a response from AFL Victoria before being able to confirm whether the 50-point caps remained or were reduced to 48.
The delay has the potential to create some problems for clubs basing their recruiting campaigns on player point caps.

Ward said there had also been a number of updates to the player points system, including the removal of discretion for metropolitan leagues and region commissions to manage breaches of the policy via education and training.
He said enforcement provisions must now be applied for any breaches.
The premium player category has also undergone changes in relation to top five finishes in club best and fairests, and removing reference to competition best and fairest results, and club leading goalkicker.
Ward said a complete updated version of the player points system was available on the Goldfields website.
