VCE coordinator Sylvia Loader said the school’s 21 VCE students were happy with how they handled Wednesday’s compulsory English exam, while psychology students were also optimistic after their Thursday exam.

“I think they feel pretty confident,” Ms Loader said, adding the students had worked very hard all year.

“We’ve still got kids coming in all day and studying.

“I think some of them feel they can focus better here than at home.”

Prior to the vital exam period, the students celebrated their 12 years of schooling by being walked in and out of their graduation ceremony by a prep pupil they were partnered with at the start of the year.

Students were presented with a sash and certificate by principal Michael Stewart, year 12 VCE coordinator Sylvia Loader and VCE teacher Scott McKenzie. 

School captains Brendan Thomas and Alice Monkman also gave speeches.

VCE exams continue today with biology and further maths and end on November 16 with Indonesian, Japanese and Chinese.

Parenting website, Raising Children Network, also has some tips to look after the whole family during what can be a very stressful period.

The website’s executive director, Associate Professor Julie Green, says parents of teenagers can support their children by encouraging some good habits.

“Good quality sleep helps your child to concentrate and remember things – vital for exams and exam prep,” Associate Professor Green said.

“Conversely, poor sleep or not enough sleep affects concentration, memory and behaviour, making it harder for your children to learn.

“Encourage a regular bedtime routine in a dark room and electronic devices switched off.”

She said exercise also has lots of study benefits, including helping with stress and sleep patterns.

“Encourage your teenager to keep up with their normal sporting/exercise activities, where possible, during the study and exam period.”

She also advised providing nutritious meals and snacks during the study and exam period and providing ample support.

“Your teenage still needs a strong relationship with you to feel confident as they meet the challenges of studying and exams.

“You can build on this strong relationship by working on open communication and staying connected.”
