Investigators have been told the victim was following a car, described as a silver 80s or 90s BMW or Volvo station wagon, when it pulled up at a stop sign on Bennett Street about 4.15pm.
When the car did not move for some time, the victim beeped his horn and the driver of the silver car got out, armed with what is believed to have been an orange baseball bat.
When he walked towards the victim, the victim reversed and collided with another vehicle behind him.
The offender has then gotten back into his car and driven off west towards Gisborne Road.
No one was injured in the incident.
The man is described as aged in his 30s, about 180 centimetres, with a medium build and short dark hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt and police believe there may have been a passenger in his car.
