A trailer carrying Zaiden Barry’s go-kart, racing suits, engines, safety equipment, protecting gear, tools and trophies he had won over the past two years was stolen from a locked Mitchell Park yard early Tuesday morning.
The kart and equipment has been valued at $20,000. It was one of two trailers stolen from the yard of an indoor go-karting business in Mentay Way. Police are now investigating the theft from the Mitchell Park property, which was fenced and padlocked.
It is believed the thieves used an angle grinder to gain entry into the yard and cut a lock to release the trailer.
Zaiden needs the trailer and equipment returned so he can compete in the Tasmanian State Go-Karting Titles on November 20.
His mother Jessica Aldridge said her son was heartbroken by the theft.
“He loves go-karting and he’s really good at it. He’s a natural and he loves it,” Ms Aldridge said.
Zaiden, a club champion at Haddon, only took up go-karting three years ago after racing motocross for several years.
The Delacombe Primary School pupil said he was shocked and upset when he came home from school on Tuesday to find his go-kart had been stolen.
“It means everything to me and if I got it back I would probably cry,” Zaiden said. “I got the go-kart for my 10th birthday.”
“I was so happy and grateful,” Zaiden said. “I love go-karting and I asked for one, but didn’t realise I would get one.”
He said he went go-karting most weekends after a visit to RPM Indoor Karts first got him into the sport nearly three years ago.
“I like go-karting because you get to see all of your friends every weekend and you get to compete and win trophies.”
He already has a collection of around 43 trophies and has won the club championships two years running.
