Their four racing trikes – named Black Pearl, Kraken, Jar of Dirt and Captain Sparrow in a Pirates of the Caribbean theme – have been lovingly built and maintained by their 27-student team.
And next week, the South Star Warriors will hit the Maryborough track for their sixth appearance at the RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge.
Middle School head Glen Strange said they have four teams competing, with its energy efficient vehicle completing 384 laps, or 607 kilometres, last year and winning first in class and 21st overall.
“The kids are from year six to year 12 and they mix really well,” Mr Strange said.
“It’s made a lot of them feel that school is a special place to come. They are building good relationships and we could never come into it with any better goal than that.”
Mr Strange said two year 12 students, Brendan Thomas and Caroline Debicki, had been working as bike technicians since year 7.
“They are our master techies. They know the trikes inside and out.”
The South Star Warriors will also have their vehicles scrutineered, answer design and construction questions and make a presentation to judges.
