Ballarat celebrated the anniversary of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and honoured the surviving Olympians with a special ceremony on Saturday.

The commemoration at the Olympic precinct was close to the spot the Olympic rowing, kayaking and canoeing events took place 60 years earlier.
The six day program of events also involved Ballarat community members as course officials, judges and staff at the Ballarat Olympic Games Athlete’s Village.
Australian swimmer Dawn Fraser addressed those in attendance including her fellow Olympians. She was joined by Ballarat mayor Samantha McIntosh and 1984 rowing bronze medalist and Olympians Club committee member Margot Foster.
The ceremony included the Olympic torch, a plaque unveiling commemorating the 1956 Olympians and redcoats firing at the conclusion of the event.
Cr McIntosh said the celebration aimed to provide an opportunity for all who were at the games to share their journey and recall their special memories.
