It will be illegal to collect firewood on public land after the closing date until March 1, provided conditions are suitable.
Forest Fire Management Victoria regional manager Peter Kambouris said there were a range of reasons for not allowing firewood collection in summer.
“It’s both for safety, access and ecological reasons; in the summer there is the risk of fire from a range of factors, including from chainsaws,” he said.
The break in seasons also gives flora and fauna a reprieve, with summer being a key breeding season.
Firewood must be collected from designated firewood collection areas and can only be for personal use. For more information visit:
