The war of words continues over the Murray Darling Basin.

The situation is ludicrous, with all Victorian storages full, apart from Eildon, at 80 per cent, and Dartmouth, at 75 per cent, and it’s close to the end of November.

Victorian irrigators have not yet received 100 per cent allocation. What a joke.

Probably due to the fact that 20 per cent of storage is environmental entitlement.

Our founding fathers would be furious to see what the environmental lobby and weak-kneed politicians have done to agricultural productivity. - David Everist

Our founding fathers would be furious to see what the environmental lobby and weak-kneed politicians have done to agricultural productivity.

To cap it off, the foul-mouthed rant by the South Australian agriculture minister related to environmental flows not water that could generate dollars. How surprising.

The call by Victorian Liberals for an urgent cost benefit study has merit.

Climate group

It has been mooted that a group be set up to assist farmers in dealing with climate variability, in other words climate change and global warming. What a load of bureaucratic rot.

Find me a farmer who could name an identical season over a five-year period. Down the years farmers have adapted, changing pasture varieties and even breeds of sheep and cattle.

After all, a case in point is the many types of merino that bear no resemblance to those that came ashore in Sydney cove.

Now agriculture has the assistance of teams of scientists who breed more productive crops and pastures.

Just a heads up to those promoting another body on climate change (if it is occurring). Give up. Any moves to arrest natural change will come to nought. Use funds to finance further science.

It may be worthwhile to remember the Vikings farmed in Greenland and Iceland during a warm period from around 800 to 1200AD.

Name calling

Whether you are a monarchist or a republican the USA presidential election has shown how much better our system is.

The name calling and abuse has been beyond belief. The inappropriate use of social media has been shocking and the money spent could have filled many hungry mouths.

Whilst many may hunger for an autonomous head of state, the process to this end should be very carefully considered.

Maybe if it is not broken why fix it ?
