A woman remains in a critical condition after being rescued from a car that plunged into a dam at Healesville, north east of Melbourne, on Saturday.

The woman was airlifted to The Royal Melbourne Hospital after being dragged unconscious from the vehicle driven by a man believed to be her husband.

It is believed the pair had been on the way to Werribee Mercy Hospital to see their newborn.
First Constable Amara Bostock said the car was travelling on a dirt driveway on private property in Margaret Road shortly after 10am when it veered into the dam, which abutted the driveway.
"The male driver managed to get out and pull his female passenger from the car," First Constable Bostock said.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said paramedics performed CPR on the woman before she was taken to hospital.
He said the man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The man was taken into custody but has been released without charge.
Police are investigating the circumstances around the incident.
