The Central Highlands league representative and Kangaroos premiership player is one of two prominent new signings for newly appointed Lakers coach Tim Malone.
Lake Wendouree has also picked up former Maryborough midfielder Jayden Hooper from Eastern Football League division one team Doncaster, where he played with new Darley coach Heath Scotland.
Malone said Nijam arrived after a distinguished career with Waubra, where he has spent his entire senior career – including being part of the Roos’ 2010 premiership team.
He played for the CHFL this year.
Malone said Nijam was a strong-bodied forward/midfielder who he had no doubt would be a real asset for Lakers.
Hooper left Maryborough in the Bendigo league at the end of 2014 and was part of Doncaster’s EFL division two premiership team in his first season.
Malone said Hooper would also add to Lakers’ midfield depth.
He believes Scotland had also been keen to attract Hooper to Darley – confirmation of the quality of player he was.
Malone said with Nijam and Hooper adding to the recruitment of Daylesford’s Jordan Alexander, he was pleased with the progress Lakers were making in bolstering their list.
He said Lake Wendouree was close to finalising its recruiting with perhaps one more key signing to come.
Malone there was also the added bonus of a high player retention rate.
He said versatile tall Tom Carey, who represented the BFL last season before struggling with a foot injury going into the finals, was their biggest loss to date.
