Police are appealing for any witnesses who saw the attack to come forward.
The elderly man was leaving the Peel Street Coles on Friday just after 10.30am when he was knocked over, leaving him with serious injuries.
Police are searching for a 190cm man of medium build who fled on foot.
A number of paramedics were called to the supermarket. Leading Senior Constable Mark Armstrong said the victim required hospitalisation and ongoing medical treatment.
The elderly man’s arm was broken during the attack.
