The 14-year-old was found safe and well after wandering from a Mount Helen home, and becoming lost shortly after 5pm.
Police air wing and ground crews, including assistance from State Emergency Services, were called in to help search for the boy, who was initially considered lost in bushland.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the boy made his way to safety shortly before 11.30pm.
He was then reunited with his family.
The Courier understands the boy was found in the central business district.
Social media was abuzz about police helicopters in the air on Saturday night before police issued a short statement appealing for public help. Comments quickly turned to relief once police confirmed on social media about midnight that the boy was found and well.
