The works on display, which have been contributed by the Ballarat Society of Artists are available for sale, with a 15 per cent commission going to the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.
The Fiona Elsey Cancer Laboratory was established in Ballarat in 1998, with the support and backing of the community after local teenager, Fiona Elsey lost her battle with cancer in 1991.
“It’s one of the charities that’s local to Ballarat-seems to be the right fit,” Owner of the Alexandria Tearooms and Receptions, Mr Shelmerdine said.
“Their local artists and any commission should go back to local charities.”
The artwork was chosen to reflect a Sun, Sea and Surf theme for the summer period. A variety of mediums, from watercolours, arcrylics and oils have been used to produce the diverse collection, which was produced by 14 local artists.
Mr Shelmerdine said local artists have been displaying their work in different exhibitions at the venue since August as part of an ongoing partnership he has with the Society. Their last collection was based on the season of spring.
“We try to keep in theme with the seasons. We collectively decide which works to display based on that.” Mr Shelmerdine said.
“I love art and I know the artists have trouble finding a space to exhibit.” Mr Shelmerdine said about the collaboration.
The Ballarat Society of Artists, which has existed since 1982, seeks to promote local artists and artwork and holds meetings on a monthly basis for its membership, which numbers over 80.
The artists are also participants in community events like the Begonia Festival and Ballarat Heritage Weekend, as well as ‘Art in the Park’.
The group also has demonstrations and workshops and welcomes members of all levels of achievement.
