A Stawell Gift finalist this year, Rizzo has launched the Victorian Athletic League season impressively.
Just four meets have been contested, but Rizzo has already secured a victory – the Northcote Gift over 100m. He ran off 5.5m in that outing and has 5.75m for the 120m New Year’s Day.
Matt Carter has the back mark of 2.5m in the Maryborough Gift, with Khan Marr on 3.5m.
Khan won a semi-final at this meet this year from 3.25m before finishing fourth in the final.
Youngsters Mason Keast (9m) and Corey Baker (6m) are Ballarat interests.
Although yet to win, Keast has had a promising start to the season with a third in the Terang Gift, second in the Terang 70m and third in the Northcote 70m. Keast has gone onto the VAL circuit after a strong secondary schools track and field campaign.
The consistent Noddy Angelakos (9m) is always a chance in these events, having finished second in this Gift earlier this year.
Ballarat’s reigning Stawell Women’s Gift champion Talia Martin shares the back mark of 6m in the women’s necklace 120m.
She shares the mark with fellow Ballarat athletes’ Ella Squire and Holly Nichols, as well as Montana Beruldson.
The Maryborough Gift at Princes Park is scheduled for 4.10pm, with the necklace final at 1.43pm.
