Fortnightly services will begin next week, with Bacchus Marsh residents to receive their collection first.
The non-compulsory greenwaste collection service will be available to properties in urban areas of Bacchus Marsh, Hopetoun Park and Ballan, with a cost set at $50 from January to June, 2017.
Annual costs are likely to be between $80 and $100 a year, applied to the Annual Rate and Valuation Notice, plus the one off cost of a new bin.
The cost is dependent on take up rates – the more residents that apply for a service, the more cost effective the service will become.
Moorabool Shire Council mayor David Edwards is encouraging more residents to take up the service.
“The service starts in January and we have more than 600 residents already in the system to receive that first greenwaste bin pick up,’ Cr Edwards said.
“The service forms part of our strategy to reduce the amount of waste to landfill. This should reduce landfill costs to Council and ratepayers and is good for the environment, so we encourage residents to get on board,” Cr Edwards said.
More than 700 residents have so far signed up for green waste collection and while there is no limit on the number of applications it is still only available in urban areas.
Council expects up to 1000 tonnes of waste a year will be diverted from landfill.
Green waste collected will be sent to a composting facility in Mount Wallace where it will be processed for landscaping and agricultural purposes.
Council began investigating the need for a green waste service in 2015 when it released a survey to its residents to gauge interest.
A tender for the contract was awarded to KG Coy & Sons Pty Ltd in September last year.
“Approximately 15 to 20 per cent of kerbside garbage is made up of garden organics so the introduction of this new service is expected to divert up to 1000 tonnes away from landfill each year,” Moorabool Shire Council infrastructure general manager Phil Jeffrey said at the time.
Moorabool’s green waste collection follows the City of Ballarat new service, while Golden Plains Shire Council also investigated the potential for collection, but decided against it after feedback from residents in 2015.
