Goodstart Early Learning organised the fundraiser after employee and colleague Svetlana Murphy was left a single mother to five children – one as young as two-months – when her husband suddenly and unexpectedly died in September.
Ms Murphy does not have any immediate family in Australia.
Goodstart Wendouree centre director and event organiser Linda Wright said she was an inspiring woman, mother, work colleague and friend.
“We would like for Svetlana and her children to enjoy some time away from the heartache of losing their father and to see their cousins and nieces,” she said. “It’s just about helping with the healing process of their loss.”
The market, which was held on Saturday in Victoria Park, included stalls, face painting, games and activities for the kids and a sausage sizzle.
Ms Wright said the Ballarat Lions Club donated all their proceeds from the day towards flights for the family. Sinclair Meats had donated sausages, while Kelly Sports held games and activities for children.
The event also received support from Ballarat City Council.
“Everyone in the community – no matter what part they played – have all been very supportive of helping us set this fundraiser up,” Ms Wright said.
“I’m very overwhelmed with the response we have received. Everyone I have approached has been very helpful in supporting the family… it warms your heart.”
