The installation of temporary bus bays on Ararat Street, announced by Public Transport Victoria on Monday, will lead to the loss of 10-11 public angled parking spaces on the track side of the street.

A statement from the City of Ballarat on Wednesday confirmed the introduction of three overlay bus bays would require the reduction of parking spaces.

There are currently 32 angled bays on the track side of the street including two disabled parking spots.

The other side of the street features 12 parallel parking spaces.

Council’s Infrastructure and Environment Director Terry Demeo said council is pushing to have a full interchange – which was controversially omitted from the first stage of the state government’s $44 million precinct redevelopment – built as soon as possible.

“The City of Ballarat and Council will continue to advocate strongly for a full bus interchange to be provided within the Ballarat Station Precinct,” he said.

A government spokesperson did not say if a full interchange was in upcoming 2017-18 budget considerations.

The overlay buses, which often sit idle with engines running for more than 10 minutes, were originally scheduled to stop along the temporary interchange on Lydiard Street North to coincide with PTV’s new timetable on January 29. The move would have seen 23 parks along Lydiard Street North removed, however, it’s unclear if moving the overlay bus bays will lead to the retention of more parks long the stretch.

PTV is continuing to consult with local residents and stakeholders.
