Kathy Curlis, 60, died in July last year after a car was rear-ended and pushed into her as she crossed a busy road.

She had been using the marked zebra crossing at Mountain Highway and Boronia Road and the car's driver had seen her and come to a complete stop to allow her to cross, police said.

That's when a delivery truck is alleged to have slammed into the back of the car, launching the car forward, triggering the fatal collision.

Nearby residents have complained about the crossing for years; she was the second person to be hit and killed at the crossing.

The crossing is at the corner of two large arterial roads with a speed limit of 80km/h.

VicRoads has said it was working closely with police to better understand what led up to the fatality.

On Wednesday, a 45-year-old man, from Ferntree Gully, was formally charged over the incident.

He is charged with dangerous driving causing death, culpable driving, reckless conduct endangering life, driving in a dangerous manner and careless driving.

He has been bailed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court next week.

Meanwhile, the zebra crossing is still awaiting upgrades.

A VicRoads director told Fairfax Media in November that the zebra crossing remained a "serious road safety risk" and major changes would be required to make it safer.

Ms Curlis' husband, Harry, has said he wants it fixed as soon as possible to avoid another tragedy.
